Day 10 - We are Ruined...the Sky is Falling...

It was quite the emotional morning as the students said good bye to their host families. They were all excited to see each other again and share stories, at the same time having a hard time leaving their new found friends.

Once we all boarded our coach - we made our way to Pompeii where we had a guided tour of the historic site.  They learned that Mt. Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and rained ash and stone.  The city was completely destroyed and buried under 30 feet of debris.  The entire area extends 66 hectares (approximately 164 acres).  We were able to see the remains of the house of Vettii, the paved streets, shops, bedrooms, ovens, paintings, mosaics, temples, plaster casts of bodies which were frozen in time, the house of mystery and the house of Faun, bath houses and the forum.  The tour ended at the temple of Zeus with Zeus' statue and Vesuvius in the background.  Awesome site.

The students also were shown how to make cameo's out of conch shells which some thought was fascinating.  Before leaving Pompeii and heading to Naples, we had about 30 minutes to do a little shopping before boarding the coach one more time.

In Naples we did a short city walk taking in the beauty of Castle Nuovo, Duomo di Napoli, Catterdrale di Santa Maria Assunta or Cattedrale di San Gennaro in the Palazzo di Castel Nuovo.

We are now tucked into bed waiting for our adventure trekking up Vesuvius tomorrow!  Hopefully better internet over the next few days!!
